Introduction
Carrowcullen’s facilities and and features relate to its 1880s origins as a farmhouse. Therefore it retains some features which need to be brought to today’s guests’ attention. Particularly be aware that original staircase has narrow and uneven steps and the doors and stairwell overhang have low thresholds. Experience the 19thc farming life when the design of the houses helped retain heat and the centre of the house and indoor activity was the kitchen and its hearth!
‘Public’ Rooms:
The layout of the house corresponds to the rooms’ 19thc functions. On the one hand, the ground floor, as it would have traditionally, has the ‘public’ rooms (kitchen, parlour, sitting room). The centre of the house was the kitchen and hearth. The ‘parlour’ would have been set aside awaiting important guests/gatherings.

‘Private’ Rooms:
On the other hand, Carrowcullen the first floor has the ‘private’ rooms, the bedrooms. Originally the first floor had two large bedrooms at the gable ends, and a smaller bedroom in the middle. In order to introduce indoor plumbing, we split the middle bedroom to form a family bathroom and a child’s bedroom.

Healthy and Sustainable Living for All:
Carrowcullen promotes healthy living and sustainability and also is a working farm. Therefore, it is a non-smoking property both within the premises and in the outdoor areas. The area around the farmhouse is gated and hedged. Please keep the gates closed at all times. Carrowcullen is within open farmland where sheep roam freely. By keeping gates closed, the gardens and orchard are protected as are the sheep keeping with their own flock within the fenced pastures.

Carrowcullen’s Facilities and Features on the Ground Floor:
Kitchen:
Traditional kitchen with original table and four ‘tuck under’ chairs. Undercounter fridge/freezer in islnad with food preparation area above.
Gas cooker stove with eye-level grill, microwave and electric kettle. Salt-glazed butlers sink with dishstrainer, cutlery basket and washing up tub. Small dishwasher. Iron/table top ironing board. Washing up liquid provided.
Cloakroom (toilet and basin) under stairs; toilet paper only to be flushed; all other items place in bin provided. Supply of two-ply toilet paper and tissues for resupply. Cylinder vaccuum cleaner (NOT to be used for ashes), dust pan and brush, broom, cleaning supplies.
Parlour:
Parlour with wood stove. 19th c furniture: arm chairs, reading table, gate-leg side table, dresser, oak bench, two so-called ‘smoking’ chairs (one original), original parlour chair/s. Professional standard Bluthner upright Model B piano.
Sitting Room:
Sitting Room (or additional bedroom for guests who might find the 19thc. narrow and uneven stairs a challenge). Dining gate-leg table, wood stove, original reading/dressing table, books, original wardrobe, undercounter larder fridge (to augment the kitchen’s undercounter fridge/freezer). Behind a inlaid wood screen is a19c. cast iron high rise cistern, toilet and ceramic sink.
Original painted stairs, narrow and uneven, with staircase and banister lead to First floor. Low threshold overhanging ceiling.

Master Bedroom
Master bedroom with double bed. Early 1900s ceramic sink. Original bedside table, chest of drawers, original wardrobe, original dressing/work table, dressing table mirror, original ‘ladies chair,’ and two sitting chairs. Bookcase with reading classics books.
Family Bathroom
Family bathroom with shower over 19thc. cast iron bath; given wooden walls and floors (and electric fuse board in kitchen cupboard immediately below) please use the over head shower only when you take a shower — instructions provided. High rise cast iron 19thc, cistern and ceramic toilet. Early 1900s ceramic sink.
Child’s Bedroom
Child’s bedroom with single bed and night stand. Pegs for hanging clothes. Children’s books.
Twin Bedroom with two single beds. Early 1900s ceramic sink. Chest of drawers, wardrobe, 19th c nursing chair, dressing table mirror. Original bedside table.
Carrowcullen’s Facilities and Features: Additional
Inside Facilities and Features:
Wi-fi is provided by a router and available throughout house. Password provided on booking in and on cards located in each room. We do not have fiber broadband. The router is located in the master bedroom where signal strength is the strongest; the masts are directly south located in the mountains and can be seen from the front bedroom window. The kitchen has an extender using the electrical circuits for the lower floor. Guests are advised that Carrowcullen stone walls are over 1 foot deep as are the internal walls between the main rooms. Therefore for ‘zoom’ meetings or demanding downloads, guests should avail themselves of the reception coming into the house at 4G in the master bedroom.
A small radio is located in the kitchen. Several chargers adapters are provided for guests’ convenience. A shaver adapter is in the bathroom cabinet drawer.
On wall in parlour, a small tv with UK and Irish channels with reception by satellite dish; dvd player (dvds in masterbedroom wardrobe to enable parental discretion)..
House Linens (bedding with duvets) and kitchen, hand and bath towels are provided. Beach towels are available upon request (for a nominal rental fee).
Septic tank: 2 ply toliet tissue provided. All other items are not to be flushed but placed in bins provided.
Board games/puzzles/classic and Irish culture/history books.
Firewood starter provided; additional may be available on request for reasonable charge.
Hair dryer (located in master bedroom chest of drawers). Small push lights in bedroom chest of drawers in event of power cut.
Ironing facilities (table-top ironing board and steam iron) kitchen understairs.
Health and Safety
First Aid common supplies in kitchen blue cupboard in labelled tins; there is also a sealed first aid box under stairwell.
Fire extinguisher and blanket kitchen understairs; fire extinguisher on first floor hall window sill. Instructions to open windows at back of howe on first floor hall window sill.
Outside Facilities and Features
Gated area with two benches in front garden with hedge, stone walls and gates. In orchard bistro set of two chairs and table; round wood picnic table with benches. In back of house: log benches and log low table. Facing Ladies Brae Victorian cast iron bench. Locked shed (shared) containing: Laundry (washer and dryer) (charges apply); utility sink. Limited storage for bike/sporting gear (by prior arrangement). Freezer with guest designated drawers.
Recyling and Rubbish:
Bin storage area behind dry stone wall. Bins marked respectively for the different categories of recycling and rubbish, as directed by the refuse company provider.
Parking:
Free Carrowcullen guest parking as designated for up to two cars off lane adjacent to house. Lane must be left clear for farmers to access pastures.
