I. Location:
CARROWCULLEN is located on Ireland’s WILD ATLANTIC WAY in Skreen, County Sligo. Ladies Brae and Knockachree, in the Ox Mountains, rise dramatically behind as an ever-changing backdrop. The OLD IRISH FARMHOUSE CARROWCULLEN is a 22.9 kilometers (23 minutes) drive to Sligo’s W B Yeats Building visitor centre and the Sligo County Museum. It is located on the 2203; turn off N 59 at Skreen Primary care centre; 3 kilometers; just past the Holy Hill Hermitage, a small steep hill; Carrowcullen’s iron gate immediately on the left, recessed, with a’NO SHOOTING’ and ‘please close the gate’ signs. II. The farmhouse:
CARROWCULLEN is an 1880’s traditional six-room OLD IRISH FARMHOUSE, offering space for up to six guests. In 2016 its stood derelict and has been been meticulously restored by the owner,a heritage specialist. It offers a ‘step back in time,’ unique experience as a holiday and event rental. For those with Irish roots, it offers as well a base to explore their Irish ancestry and heritage in addition to Ireland’s WILD ATLANTIC WAY natural setting.
At CARROWCULLEN guests can engage with the 19th century, while enjoying modern conveniences. Period features include original stonework, hearth, fireplaces, internal doors, staircase, decorative paint and furniture. To these have been added historical furnishings, additional furnishings and Victorian sanitary ware complementing the original features. Because of these combined features, it is, in the words of one visitor, ‘just like my grandmother’s home!’
CARROWCULLEN also offers an ideal setting for writers’ and musicians’ retreats; for musicians, its Bluthner Model B upright piano affords guests with a professional grade instrument. Furthermore, the inspiring selection of books and the log burning stoves provide perfect ingredients for those hygge moments.
III. The setting:
CARROWCULLEN the OLD IRISH FARMHOUSE is sited within inspiring and dramatic natural settings. The farmhouse is set well back from a quiet country road on a dry-stone wall lined lane. It sits within a timeless, rugged working fourteen-acre farm with outbuildings, stream, natural springs, sheep and poultry.
Furthermore, CARROWCULLEN guests can immediately take advantage of Ladies Brae and Knockachree and Sligo popular walking trails and bicycling routes, which lead from its lane and the quiet country road.
